Mr. Darcy and his coat

I'm crazy, I know it.
Lucky for me, my husband knows it as well.

Now, you know it...
I totally have a thing for Mr. Darcy walking in the mist, with his coat moving with his stride and the breeze. Yesterday morning it was totally misty and crisp... and I had to.
He was sound asleep. I woke up Kurt, had him put on his overcoat from his mission (he served in England... just a cool side note, some how making the coat more authentic) and directed him to go way down on the street and then "walk to me."
Yes, of course I had a camera! This was a moment to surely lock in time. (probably my last opportunity as well.)
The morning was perfect and so was he.

So he finnished "the walk" my five year old wants to take pictures so we do a few, "your hands are cold" photos. (perhaps to come... I'm sure no one wants to miss ME in my jammies - NOT!) My neighbor, the good jogging sort, was out for her morning run.
"Dude, I'm outta here," Kurt says.
"Oh you're o.k., just act like everything is normal." I assure him.
"This is so NOT NORMAL! Well this is now my 'cloak of invisibility'"
O.k., well thanks for indulging me. I am now complete!
What a good sport, huh?

little offering

Friends in blogland...
I have very little to offer these days.
Strep has been my enemy, and I wasn't sure if I was going to win for a few days. Now I am in the clear, but feeling very week.
Even before the strep, I was feeling a need to "re-focus" my life. Therefore, I have decided to slow WAY down on the whole blogging thing. I don't even read blogs any more.
So, friends, forgive me if I don't read about your life on blogs. I'll look forward to seeing you all at gatherings or in "normal life."
I did find this little ditty. I thought the title of the song describes where I am right now, along with picts from my favorite movies. How grand!
So, I'll be seeing you all shopping at Target or in Southlake Towne Square -- hopefully I'll be at Anthropologie, helping out at the school, serving at church or just participating in real life. Ain't it grand??
Love to you all,
Katri

Guilty Little Pleasures

Ah... what is summer without some guilty little pleasures?
After many a night enjoying North and South that graduated into a study of YouTube submissions I realized the "Mr. Thornton" also was in a little show called, "Robin Hood." Here he is as the "bad boy" with the lovely Lady Marian. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ryX-Xv_3R0 (I love this song)
Kenzie loves this song. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C8_QbL4WAk

I remember driving through the English countryside with my P&P gals last year and someone said as we were passing Sherwood Forest, "Hey, have any of you all seen the new Robin Hood on the BBC?" I had not, so as many tv show conversations, my mind flicked off and I tried to focus on driving on the wrong side of the road.
So that brings me to today. I am in the middle of season one. Guy (Mr. Thornton, Richard Armitage) is so bad and cruel. I know from the clips that he just gets hotter and hotter.

So, that brings me to my question... Who out there likes the "bad guys?" ... who likes "good guys?" I definately married a "good guy" and would never have been interested in living forever with "the bad guy" ... but I must say, I certainly loved to spend time with mildly bad guys. Ooooo.... that probably makes me bad too. Oh well, it was certainly fun.

O.k., so onto the little cuties that I have been making...

These are photos from Heather Bailey's site
Once I get a little harvest, I'll post some picts.

So... I dying to know... How many votes for Team Bad vs. Team Good?? Whatcha think?

Memories

I got this off Rebecca's blog. It's fun to keep memories.

1. As a comment on my blog, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you knew me a little or a lot, anything you remember!

2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. It's actually pretty funny to see the responses. If you leave a memory about me, I'll assume you're playing the game and I'll come to your blog and leave one about you. If you don't want to play on your blog, or if you don't have a blog, I'll leave my memory of you in my comments. Not that there would be anything other, but please keep it family friendly...my babies now read my blog. :)

Now I'm off to watch or read (haven't decided yet) North and South. I'm thinking of hosting a N&S night with brownies and drinkable caffiene. Who is game??

I'm an addict... sign me up... I need help! (my daughter was looking over my shoulder while I was scanning YouTube for other cool N&S/period films ... She said, "He's --Richard Armitage-- got the nicest smile I've ever seen in a man... Oh my!!! that's bad, right?)

Lots of Yummies...

As I put off preparing my Primary lesson and waste a little time tonight. Lookie what I found!!!
Please post any that are your favorites, or ones that you have noted as needing to see.
If you don't like period films, please don't bother watching this. I'll still be your friend even if you don't like my kind of movies. :)

North and South

Do you ever love to get lost in a story? I do.
This movie/book was highly recommended to me by a friend.
I'm reading the book now and really injoying it. (However, today was spent reading books to my little boys... something that I do not do nearly enough.)
Tonight I am returning to the land of North and South.
Anything that conjures up "Darcy" and "Rochester" in the same breath is great by me!

What do ya'll think?

Check this out.

girls trip to PHX

I know, Phoenix can be an inferno. But, I LOVE visiting Arizona. Kenzie and I were itching for a girls trip.
Kenzie had a ton of fun in the pool. She did say that she missed her brothers. Luckily, she was able to swim a bit with her friend Grace
We shopped a bit in Scottsdale. There is a really cute diner called "Sliders" They served little hamburgers with cool fixings and sweet potato fries. So FUN!
Of course, what shopping would be complete without a stop at Anthro.?! See, I'm training my little girl RIGHT! :)
On the way to Arizona, we didn't have seats assigned together...
so I decided it was the perfect time to upgrade to First Class. Totally spoiling my girl... but it was so fun.
While in Scottsdale, we popped into "Sprinkles" - Cupcakes of the Stars.
We decided it was a pretty place to visit, but the cupcakes were sub-par. Boo!

Amy Rae and I left the girls with her dh and we went out to enjoy California rolls and people watching. I don't think I have ever seen so many tube tops and tattoos. A bit disturbing. Amy Rae is a crack up and we had a great time catching up and laughing.
Kenzie and Amy's kiddos.
Pool hair - or as the girls were calling it, "George Washington Hair"
I remember doing this as a kid too.

We didn't get to hang out with our friends long enough. We left the next day to see my cousin and ...
I went the Blissful Living Studio
I got to meet Heather Bailey
and I got to take her pincushion class.

Mom and I would talk about making a special trip to Mesa to see Domestic Bliss for ourselves. Kristen at Domestic Bliss donated the most amazing "Dream Nursery" to the JDRF (Juv. Diabetes Research Foundation) that my mom bid on and won last year. There is a piece of that gift in almost every room of my home. Their studio was even more amazing that the pictures allow. I hope to make more trips to visit this wonderful, creative, inspiring place.
After dinner, my cousin, Dawn joined us to the "Emma Smith, My Story" It was in the movie theatres in the Phoenix area. It was kind of cool because I recognized several of my old class mates from BYU that continued their acting career. So cool for them!

After a breakfast at IHOP (Kenzie's favorite place to eat) we had to go home.
It was such a wonderful time. I didn't do many "mother-daughter" things with my mom. I plan on doing tons with my girl. She is a joy to be with and we enjoy each other's company a lot. (It will be sad when I am no longer "cool" during those teenage years.)
This trip went WAY too fast. We were not ready for it to end.
But we were exhausted.
Good, good times.

Just a day...

All day today I tried to remind myself that it was "just a day." For me, this is the one year anniversary of my mother's passing. I have learned a lot in the last twelve months.
Some of the things I have learned are:

  1. I have wonderful friends. My dear friend, Monica, brought this beautiful bouquet of flowers to my house last night in one of my mom's purses with a sweet note. (The purse will not be damaged. Mom would have LOVED the creativity of this, but would have been sad if the Eric Javitz bag were damaged. ) *** She never got a chance to use this purse.*** Also, I have had some very sweet people call and check on me. That means so much to know that someone in the world thinks about you.
  2. I learned that there are mean people in the world. Unfortunately, some of those people are in my family.
  3. Because of #2, I have having to honestly learn to "love those that despise you." This is not easy.
  4. I have never felt like I was "despised" before... thanks to the last 12 months, that is no longer true.
  5. The only way I can avoid becoming bitter and mean myself, is to put all my trust in the Lord. He will sort it all out in the end. I have learned that I refuse to become ugly about money, possessions or unkind words. However, I have learned that sometimes avoiding mean people is an easy way to continue to love them. (perhaps a but passive, but it works!)
  6. I have learned to be grateful, more than I thought was possible to love my husband and kids.
  7. Also, I have learned that my husband and kids can drive me to the brink of insanity. As of the last few months, I have refrained from jumping into loonyville, but it can be tempting. :)
  8. My body is abused my me. I am not as nice to my body as I should be. I watched my mother's body go through so much, yet I am not as good to my body as I should. I don't sleep well, eat well, exercise well ...
  9. Because of #6, I have little to no body realization. I will go hours without stopping to realize that I have a headache, or my shoes are not working out. This is dumb and much change.
  10. Guilt has played a little to small role in my life until this past year. Guilt is an unwelcome monkey on my back that must be gone. I can't think of a time that my mom used "guilt" as a tool of manipulation on me. What a cool thing! Guilt really bites the big one.
  11. Creativity is a passport into joy. I have known this for longer than a year, but this last year I have found such joy indulging in it. Sometimes this is at a detriment of #8. Must find balance.
  12. When it is all said and done, I hope that at the end of my life I can say that I tried my best. Not some freaked out version of "ME" on mommy-steroids, but the best that I can while not loosing "ME" in the process. Mom never lost herself in motherhood, seminary teacher, horse-woman (maybe a little bit) or wife. For good or bad, she did what she wanted to do and didn't apologize for it. She didn't work out of a card deck full of guilt, or "woulda, shoulda, coulda" she just was "HERSELF." This last year, I've decided that I need to find out who "ME" is. I don't think it will be too exciting for anyone else, but I am excited to say "no, thank you" to some things and "yes, LET"S GO!" to others. How empowering! (I am NOT running off to Italy, India or Indonesia ... no "Eat, Pray, Love" here!) I know that much of what is good about me is found in my roles as a wife and mother. So anything I do on this front will have my DH and kiddos in tow.
  13. In the last 12 months, I have thought, reflected and pondered on mom and her life. We didn't always get along or see things the same yet we usually had a respect and love for each other.
Today was not a day that I was looking for mementos. I had enough of thoughts and memories floating in my brain without help. But this letter popped out and had to be read. I like to think that it was a little gift from mom guiding my hand to pick it up.
It was written to me by my mom after the birth of my son, Carson.
"Dearest Katri,
I think it is wonderful what a great mother you are - so patient and loving w/ your kids. You truly have a Christ-centered home, and it is a real pleasure to be w/ you, Kurt and your children.
I love you and think you are the best!
Mama"
Ah, the sweetness of a handwritten note.
So onto tomorrow.

Birthday Wishes

A friend of mine turned the "Big Four-Oh" and her sweet husband contacted many of her friends and family and asked them to write notes to help her get through the milestone birthday.
I asked him how he was going to collect the letters ... long story short I volunteered to help him pull this project together.
This is what I came up with... the "Birthday Wishes Binder"
It was so fun to get together. I have been in major applique mode. This project did not manage to escape my iron.

Inside is black paper that people could hand write well wishes or the cards and letter that were sent are slipped into plastic sleeves.
I love a project. It felt great to take on a non-sewing project.

Favorite Things Swap

"My Favorite Things Swap" ... thanks so much to Kelly for hosting this fun, summer swap. Christy, my swap buddy sent my this little prize...
Flip flop, candles and chocolate! Thanks Christy, after a crazy day it was wonderful to come home to this little prize.

I hope you like what I send you...

"Whatcha watchin'?"

Finally... all the kids are in bed. Went to bed early last night, so I am ready to be my natural nocturnal self tonight.

Dang, Glen Beck has another sub... what else is on??

This is a cute movie. I remember loving it. I saved a small piece of chocolate cake and enjoyed it ... cake so moist... movie so cute...

Cute hair, cute style... a total throw back.. did they just talk about cassette tapes??? I realize, how dated this movie is...

In walks pajama wearing darling... "Whatcha watching?" she says.

"Clueless."

"Is it a show about dating?"

"Um, I guess so..."

Then she and her friends are talking about "going all the way" and that Christian is a "Friend of Dorothy" (totally forgot that phrase) Hello, my 8 year old daughter is sitting right next to me, and she is brimming with questions.

Oops! What happened? Why is the remote not working? It flipped to the news. Darn, well I guess we'll turn it off anyway. (at least that was the excuse that was offered.)
That show shocked me, it is NOT an OK film for little kids. (I know it is PG-13) but I remember liking it so much. It's interesting how different a show becomes with kids that ask a lot of questions.

"mom, what's a "friend of Dorothy" I just don't get it." she says.

Oh my.

In my parent's house

This picture was over the phone in my childhood house. I remember looking at it, and thinking that the artist used my brother as the model for the little boy that is looking strait at the viewer. I imagined myself as the little girl in the forefront with the olive jumper and white shirt with the zig-zag cuff.
As a kid, it was such a constant, it was such a given that Jesus loved me... because HELLO Jesus loves children. As a kid I knew that if Jesus would come and call the children to Him, I would be part of that select group. I would be that kid in the olive green dress.
Now as a grown-up... where would I be?

Want vs. Need

I was going through some of the stacks of papers that seem to make babies and then there is MORE paper. Before more paper babies were born I was going through the mess.

This is an assignment that Carson did at school. Want vs. Need. I don't know about you, but I don't remember getting this lesson in the first grade. Mind you, I think it is a GREAT one to have at all ages, but I thought it was interesting to see what a first grader had on each side of the list...

Want:
  • car (optional... really?? Are you sure???)
  • watch
  • bike
  • vaccuum (this one is SO optional, I'll even let someone else do it!)
  • cat

Need:

  • power bars (too bad he didn't find a candy bar!)
  • soup (really?? ... o.k.)
  • rice crispy treats
  • a manifactured log cabin
  • and ... drum roll please... Diet Coke Plus. He even knows that it has vitamins and minerals.

Ahh... I feel like such a good mom. Even my little boy knows the total importance of Diet Coke. That's my boy!

Brio - Beautiful Food

This is my new, favorite place to dine. I love that it has a lovely patio that overlooks the TownCenter fountain. It is the best place to people watch. They have beautiful food. But it tastes even better than it looks! In theory, this is supposed to make you want to eat less. Hummm... well it does make me slow down a bit and enjoy it even more.
Risotto, shrimp, asparagus, cheese... all good and yummy things. If you split this dish with your friend, you don't feel nearly as bad about the calories!
Yum! Anyone want to join me for lunch???

Pledge

Every morning, at the start of school, the childen in our school say the Pledge.

We spent a little time talking about what the words that they say actually mean. One thing that it seems people forget, is that we hold our hand to our heart and strive to uphold a Republic. Do you know what that means? I wonder sometimes if our own President remembers this fact. He keeps talking about setting up democracy in Iraq... but, our founding fathers were pretty clear that they did not want our nation to be a Democracy. They clearly wanted a REPUBLIC.

It is so frusterating... I have no one to vote for that represents my views. There is just no way for me to vote for McCain and Obama is a raging socialist.

Our Founding Fathers

From his post:
Democracy Versus Republic: Ahmed Imam
These succinct definitions of what is Democracy and what is a Republic was produced by the US Army in 1928, These definitions have been quietly withdrawn since, soon after.
Democracy:
A government of the masses.
Authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of "direct" expression.

Results in mobocracy.

Attitude toward property is comunistic-negating property rights.

Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate. whether it
be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse,
without restraint or regard to consequences.

Results in demagogism license, agitation, discontent, anarchy.

Democracy is the "direct" rule of the people and has been repeatedly tried without success.

A certain Professor Alexander Fraser Tytler, nearly two centuries ago, had this to say about Democracy: " A Democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of Government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess out of public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that Democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, always to be followed by a Dictatorship."

A democracy is majority rule and is destructive of liberty because there is no law to prevent the majority from trampling on individual rights.

Whatever the majority says goes! A lynch mob is an example of pure democracy in action. There is only one dissenting vote, and that is cast by the person at the end of the rope.

Republic:
Authority is derived through the election by the people of public officials best fitted to represent them.

Attitude toward property is respect for laws and individual rights, and a sensible economic procedure.

Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences.

A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass..

Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy. Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment, and progress.

Is the "standard form" of government throughout the world.

A republic is a form of government under a constitution which provides for the election of:
an executive and a legislative body, who working together in a representative capacity, have all the power of appointment, all power of legislation all power to raise revenue and appropriate expenditures, and are required to create a judiciary to pass upon the justice and legality of their governmental acts and to recognize certain inherent individual rights.

Take away any one or more of those four elements and you are drifting into autocracy. Add one or more to those four elements and you are drifting into democracy.

Our Constitutional fathers, familiar with the strength and weakness of both autocracy and democracy, with fixed principles definitely in mind, defined a representative republican form of government. They "made a very marked distinction between a republic and a democracy and said repeatedly and emphatically that they had founded a republic."

A republic is a government of law under a Constitution. The Constitution holds the government in check and prevents the majority (acting through their government) from violating the rights of the individual. Under this system of government a lynch mob is illegal. The suspected criminal cannot be denied his right to a fair trial even if a majority of the citizenry demands otherwise.

Difference between Democracy and Republic, in brief:
Democracy:
a: government by the people; especially : rule of the majority.
b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.
Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether it be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences

Republic
a: a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government.
b: a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law.

Democracy and Republic are often taken as one of the same thing, but there is a fundamental difference. Whilst in both cases the government is elected by the people, in Democracy the majority rules according to their whims, whilst in the Republic the Government rule according to law. This law is framed in the Constitution to limit the power of Government and ensuring some rights and protection to Minorities and individuals.

The difference between Republic and Righteous Republic is that in the Republic the Government rules according to the law set up by men, in the Righteous Republic the law is the Law of God. Only in the Righteous Republic it can truly be said "One nation under God" for it is governed under commandments of the only One True God and there is no pluralism of religions.

Autocracy declares the divine right of kings; its authority can not be questioned; its powers are arbitrarily or unjustly administered.
Mobocracy: 1. Political control by a mob. 2. The mass of common people as the source of political control.

warning!

Maybe I should have known better, but this was a really embarrassing movie. I loved Happy Gilmore and the commercials of this one, but "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" was barely tolerable. It was so nasty and over the top. I know, you are probably saying, "WHAT?!?!? Adam Sandler? Over the top? Say it's not so!"

All the funny parts are in the commercial, so save your time and $$ and just see the trailer.

I'm just sayin'

Happy Birthday Katrina

A few of us gathered to wish our friend Katrina a happy birthday last night.
After the first week of summer break, it was GREAT to see some girlfriends and just get out of the house for a bit. Thanks Katrina for having your birthday the week after school got out. ;)
Katrina has a beautiful house. I found this and immediately thought of Katrina's place. (dang! I wish that color would work in my house!) Please note cool white flower ring from Laurie so perfect that Katrina popped it on right away.
Rochelle put this cool "M" on the napkins to go with the table runner.
I just love the way this all looked together.

Happy Birthday Katrina. I hope you have a wonderful day. Love ya, and I'm so glad that we are friends.

Summer - Things I love...

Well, this is not a thing that I love, but the fact remains... Summers make a lot of bad hair days. Just get used to it. You all will see my sunglasses on my head A LOT!
Friends. I hope to have a lot of friends over this summer for my kids. It is such a joy to see them play. (They never do seem to get tired of making "bunny ears" on each other for pictures ... I guess I did the same thing as a kid too.)
Kenzie got a reading award at school. I hope that we all will make the time to read some great books this summer. For me, there is little that is as magical as a wonderful book.
Class Party-- It was great to have all the kids over to swim, jump on the tramp and eat snow cones. A wonderful summer day.
Carson finnished first grade. He is such a great kid. It was wonderful to see all of the great art work and other projects that he brought home. It is a joy to see him turn into such a smart, confident, good kid.
Ice Cream. I just think watching little kids and melting ice cream cone is the cutest. They just never can quite keep up with the melts. Here come Super Mommy to save the day! I'll take care of those run away melts!!! For some reason, they never are greatful for the sacrifice that we moms perform! :)
Swimming - Cool, refreshing... a summer CLASSIC!
I love summer. There is so much to do!

busy, busy!

Kenzie and I worked on these flip flops. She has a really cute idea for her "bff". She made this pair and a green pair, then she wants to give one of each to her friend. Yes, one green flip flop and one pink. She is thrilled. I just have to giggle and remember that this was HER project, not MINE! :)

But, I did want to get a picture of the flip flops before they are split.
Also, Kenzie and I made the Pants with the bird applique. Rochelle and I took a Saturday afternoon and taught the girls some sewing skills. Kenzie is now convinced that this summer is the summer of sewing projects. How FUN!!! :)

This year for Achievement Days, we made these little magnetic boards with the girls first initial on them. We give them to each girl on their birthday.

This is a project that I have wanted to get going for a long time. Finally I just decided that I was getting my own Mylar bag sealer and going to it! I did two different kinds of flour and sugar, but the sky is the limit! I am needing to focus on food storage and make sure that the day doesn't come when I have nothing to give my kids to eat.

Kurt's father's family is from Germany and after World War II his father's family had so little to eat. What a horrible feeling it would be to tell my kids that there is nothing to eat. So, I am trying to make sure that I am doing what I can to have things in my food storage. They may not like some things, but if they refuse to eat that is different than not having it. (One of my boys is going through an UBER picky stage... heaven help us!)

I love Memorial Day. In the past, we have celebrated mom's birthday. This year we started what I hope will be a tradition of going to the cemetary. The kids put little flags on the graves. When I was in school during summer term, I took a flower arranging class. One of the assignments was to go to the cemetary and look at the flower arrangements. I had no idea what I was in for, because Memorial Day is HUGE in Utah. I loved this tradition and now that my mom is buried there it is especially neat to take the kids and spend a little time there. They loved hearing stories of their family and running around the beautiful grounds.

I love this time of year when school gets out and summer is ahead of us. We have lots of great plans, goals to accomplish and projects to do.

I'd better take my vitamins!!!

A Year of Wonders

I just finnished this book today.
I have a problem... I buy books... lots of books.

Something great happened to us the last week or so...

we were sick and Kurt was out of town.

That means I had a lot of time to read. At least when the kids were zoned out and I was on pain medication.

This is a good book for me to read when sick. At least I didn't have the plauge.

I LOVED the main character in this book. Anyone read it and want to chat?

We are all well now, and probably need to go back to "project mode."
I am leaving Chiffoniers in Fort Worth and will be having a sale during the month of June. Keep posted for details.

War Raging Webkinz

It's been a rocky week at the K. Kastle. I was so happy with the kids for getting along and being nice that it was a pleasure to get them some brand new "Guilt Kinz" Don't you know... they relieve parent from (almost) all feeling of guilt, brought around by neglect. (I have been majorly sick as well.)

Warning: The peace and harmony we have had for the last five days is now gone. Now it's all about who get time on what computer. Yes, we have more than one... three in fact, yet still the fighting rages.

Let's change the word to: "War Raging Webkinz" --- how many names can we come up for these babies? And summer hasn't even started. :)

alternate reality?

I WISH it were that simple. It looks like my happy family is suffering from an"adenovirus"

Why does it seem so much better to handle after it has a name? Very high fevers, stomach pain, throwing up, sore throats, pink eye, blatter infections... to name a few of the symptoms. LOVELY! Oh, did I mention that three out of the four have it?

My dh was working out of town last week and this week but came home early yesterday, which is a good thing because I am sick as well. I would have sworn that I had strep throat, but now I know, I don't. Just this lovely virus.

Lame.

And, I missed the Anthropologie sale... boo hoo.

Yet, something must be o.k., when I am stuck with the kids all week, all of us sick, yet I see myself so blessed. This will pass. And when we are all on the upswing of Tylenol, things are great and life is good. Kenzie and I were even able to work on a little project until we both started feeling weak and shaky.

I just HOPE that I haven't passed this on to any of my friends. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

P.S. - Corn Spoonbread

The menu of the party had a bit of a Mexican flair to it. I added a family favorite to the mix. Mom called it "Corn SpoonBread" but surely we can come up with a better name than that. (any ideas? Please post!) I was asked for the receipe. Here it is:
I made them into little muffins. My kids love anything baked in miniture.

May Bookclub 2008

We read, These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner. I really enjoyed this book and hoped that my lovely bookclub gals would enjoy it as well.

This is how the table was set. I thought that Sarah needed a little pop of color in her life. I appliqued some whimsical flowers on the napkin. I have wanted to do this for quite some time, so I was glad to finally take the opportunity to do so.
This is a cool old campfire coffee pot given to me by my grandmother. (actually the converstation when something like, "do you want this old thing? ... if not I'll get rid rid of it.) YES! I'll take it! I have had it for several years, and only now used it. It's so funky, old, and big! I love it.
The party was a little late starting... but we went ahead with the photo op.
Since These is My Words was written in journal style, I sent everyone home with their own journals. I love keeping all of my lists, ideas, brainchilds in one spot.

Mum's the Word

They have the cutest advertizements in London. FYI - Mother's Day is a month earlier in Great Britian. Mother's Day was never that big of a deal when I was a kid. I guess my mom was never very into it. That drove me a little crazy as a child and now as an adult I try to establish the rituals and traditions that I yearned for when I was young. Whenever I didn't like something my mom would do, or NOT do, she would say, "When YOU are the mom, you can do it the way YOU want to."

I have taken her at her word, and do just that. I try to do things how I want to do them.

Today, I have been grateful for her unsentimental ways. It has made it a little easier.

This first mother's day without her has been really o.k. because my husband and kids made me feel so special and wonderful all day. Even a few of my treasured friends "checked-in" with me. How sweet and thoughtful. I know... I am so blessed.

The weeks leading up to today, however, have been though. I think about mom. I wish she were here. I wish I didn't have to take on some of the responsibilities that fall to me, but I take them and try to do the best that I can. Most of all, I wish that there was that other person to love my kids and marvel at how wonderful they are. I wish that I still had that person that was so happy for my success and cheered me on. I wish that there was someone like her that was so proud of me, and bragged about me even when I would say, "oh mom, you're embarrassing me!"

To avoid feeling sad, I have tried to focus all of my feelings to seeing the blessings in my life. And then I realize... I have so many friends that fill the void my mom left. Thank you, my friends. I know that the world is filled with wonderful people. I am honored to know many GOOD people.

So, to all of you GOOD PEOPLE out there... thank you.

Finally!!!

I love to read. I love London. So therefore... I should love this book.

It's wierd, because I really enjoyed this book, but it was a pain to read. It is 800+ pages ... which is fine... but I had to recheck it twice from the library.

There is a literal pile of "to read books" that is steadily increasing.

Luckily, Katrina's bookclub selection for the month of April I had recently read. Please check out Katrina's blog and Laurie's blog for the lovely picts. It was out of this world. Great food, conversation and cool shoes... you gotta see it!

May Day

This time last year I was walking to the Victoria and Albert Museum. It was a beautiful day, I was in my favorite city, with three of my dear friends wearing my baby in a sling. It was a beautiful day, trip ... Rochelle blogged a bit about it here.
As I walked down the busy street in South Kensington we happened upon these delightful girls, taking a break from school in the play yard. (What lucky girls to go to school right across the street from the V&A!) All of a sudden, I realized... It's May Day! The first day of May. Perhaps these girls always played so delightfully, but I imagined that they were especially lovely today for the sake of May Day.
I remembered as a child dancing around a May Pole with all of the other kids in my class. We wore our Sunday clothes and (hopefully) did a lovely weaving dance. At the end, there was a pole with lovely ribbons braided just so.
Apparently this is a very old tradition. Very pagan and something to do with fertility. Well... I choose not to het too bogged down with those points.

For me, it's all about the ribbons, flowers and pretty dresses.

Perhaps, MayDay, will become my favorite holiday. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas, and it would be difficult for a holiday to be more loved than Thanksgiving. It's just that I think that MayDay is too pretty a holiday to be forgotten anymore. I propose it should be celebrated next year.

Anyone game for a party???

Funny you asked...

Rebecca just asked about aprons. On Sunday, two of the moms of Young Women (the teenage girls program at church) asked me in the hall if I needed another project. Well, the answer should be "no" (three callings is enough!) but projects are so tantalizing! I am so glad that I asked more questions....
I guess the girls are getting ready for a "pioneer trek." I don't know ANY details except that they needed to get some cuts of fabric and they are going to make two aprons each.
Many of you know of my ridiculous fabric stash. I was happy for the girls to come over and pick through some stuff. The idea was just to cut the squares that they needed... but we started playing around with pom-pom fringe and such...
and these are what we ended up with! I am really proud of these girls. They did most of the work by themselves. I helped only a little.
What cute, wonderful girls. It was a pleasure to be in their company. Hopefully some cute aprons will make a few days of "pioneer grub" sans make-up and I-phones more worth it. (but probably not!:)

So, any other questions out there??? Maybe some more fun projects will fall in my lap.

Don't Tease me so!

Is it even possible? This (see below) is the only way right now I can see myself participating in the election. I think that Romney can do great things for our economy. Choosing Mitt as a running mate would make pulling the lever for McCain almost tolerable.

tweet tweet little birdie

I am so grateful to have a daughter that loves the stuff I "make" for her. As of late, I have been on a bit of a bird kick. Here is one little project that was kinda fun... Honestly, I heart pom-pom fringe. Love, love, love IT!
We have been very busy around here... more photos to come...

Diets are Sad

Diets ARE sad, aren't they? That's why I avoid them most of the time.
I saw this ad in a bakery in London. How cute?! :)

Right now, I am starting a workout trend and so far I am loving it. I meet with a trainer twice a week and do cardio 5 times a week.

I had let Diet Coke go as "Vice Numero Uno" for the last few months... but have fallen "off the wagon" -- or "on" however you figure it. Diet Coke is coming back as my dear friend, but hopefully not my "bff."

What is amazing to me is learning some of the people who profess to want me most to loose weight (mostly family members) are some of the best sabotagers. What's up with that?

What is going to make it so that this time the stars will align and I will reach my goal?? Maybe one, I have actually set a goal. Two, I am not letting anyone rain on my parade and subvert my wishes.

I am doing this because I want to.

I mentioned this problem to some dear friends over lunch today, plus to my trainer. I was surprised to hear of the many stories of (men in particular) that would say that they wanted their women to look better/loose weight and yet there were many outside forces that derailed them.

Not ME! It's time to take control. Diets are sad. This is not a diet... it's my life!

Great Post!!!

Hey Friends--
Check it out!
Mo' Power!

Olympics? Anyone?

Usually I am fairly astute as to what is going on in the world. But, I have ZERO interest in the Olympic Games. I understand that China is horrible to Tibet, but I don't know why. (my guess is that is somehow about money/power) I understand that there are many that feel passionately about this subject. If you are one of those people, will you please post? I would love to hear what someone has to say about it.

Frankly, right now I am trying not to watch the "Mormon Sect" and trying to figure out what is going on with our economy.

Also I am so TIRED of the election. None of the three people in the race are exciting to me. Anyone want to try to sway me away from my belief that Obama is a socialist, Clinton a glassy eyed power freak that will spend into oblivion (Bush has gotten a pretty good start on that, but the tax breaks were nice), and McCain a donkey in elephant's clothing? None of these canadates will be good for the country... or the ecomony, imho. Anyone want to send me opinions/hate mail??? :)

life is good

What joy it brings me that my daughter doesn't really watch much t.v. However, I "dvr" Hannah Montana and sometimes we watch it together. What a cutie Miley Cyrus is... we are both smitten!
I can't even say how much I appreciate the good "role models" out there. Hopefully the crazy show biz life won't get to darling Miley. She seems to have a pretty good head on her shoulders for a fifteen year old. (ummm... if that is possible! :)
Here is another little ditty that I'll put on my side bar for a while http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Whi8ZIsXVDM

Sweet!

So... I know the day will come that I need to keep my opinions under my hat. You know that nice guy that you go on the date with, once mom says, "I really like that guy" -- daughter never wants to see him again... the mother's kiss of death. The same can be true with media, people and just about anything. If mom likes it, it's LAME!

But not yet. We can still munch on pop corn in our jammies and share movies, books and just "chitter chat" as Kenzie calls it. I love it. Don't let this time end. When it does ...

So far... My life's most welcome unexpected joy.

I have three boys and one girl. Our girl came to our family first. I thought as a new mom, "Yeah, a girl! How soon is too soon to get a bow on her head? ... day one? o.k."

Boys, however, were very new territory for me. One of my dear friends in California told me before my first boy was born how happy she was for me to have a son. That sons love their moms in the most unique way. O.k., I was willing to take her word for it but I had no frame of reference for what she saying. Swallowing a tiny bit of disappointment that my daughter would not have a sister next to her in age. (I have always had the fantasy that sisters are all like Jane and Lizzy in Pride and Prejudice ... I know that is not so, but the fantasy remains.)

But here is the honest truth... I LOVE being a mom of boys. Maybe they are not quite as fun to shop for, or decorate for... but for me it is a mute point when it comes to the sweet way they treat me. Most of the time, that love is shown in small, sometimes silly ways but it is there in abundance.
There is something unexplainable about my love for my boys. I am sad to think of them growing up, moving away, shaving their face... but to think that maybe, there will be three more good men out there in the world makes me very happy.
My boys are so different from each other, yet each one is teaching me so much about being a mom. My oldest is teaching me to think and look at everything. I love to see his mind working and the wonderful way his mind works. He is teaching me to be more patient and more kind.
My middle son teaches me to laugh. He is a character and very imaginative.
Baby teaches me to SLOW DOWN and treasure every day. Because of him, I try to slow down enough every day to just look at each of my kids.
The title of "mother" is the most treasured title. Our Heavenly Father obviously knows what each of us need. I need these, crazy, funny, sweet, tender, loving, stubborn, smart (too smart sometimes) little boys.

Sons are my life's most unexpected joy. I knew I'd love my kids... I just didn't know it was possible to feel like this. So blessed.

Coming home...

Ahhh.... to be home.
I missed my kiddos. The did really well and looked out for each other in the sweetest way. I think that my oldest little girl took a lot of responsibility on herself. She was especially glad to see us home. My dear, sweet friend, Monica looked out for all four for the week we were gone. (I didn't mention that she has FIVE of her own!!!)
My absolute favorite part of the trip was that I came home with a deep sense that there are good people all over the world. Like the cab driver that brought back the wallet that Kurt left in his cab, the wonderful couple that has become like family for Kurt's Opa in Germany and sweet Monica that looked after my children with such love.
When Monica told me after I got home that she wondered if she could ever love children the same as she did her own... and that after watching my children she knew that the answer was, yes. She could love children as closely as her own because thats how she felt about my crazy brood. I knew that it was the sweetest blessing to know that there are good people all over the earth.
That just feels good to know that there is love all around if you look for it.

Also, this is what I came home to... (this picture is a week old) Not so good.

It has taken me a couple of weeks to post about the trip. With a little time, I can look at the pictures and think of the good, without focusing on the things that went wrong. There is good all around. It is good to be home, to kiss my children and get into my usual routine. But a little break away was certainly educational.

Zurich and then into Germany

Here's the deal.... it was FREEZING!!! We flew into Zurich, stayed there overnight, picked up a rental car and then we were off to see some cool castles. Oh, did I mention that it was FREEZING?! (and I am wearing the same stupid green jacket everyday of the entire trip???)

One of the castles that we visited has this really cool artwork on the walls. I just loved it. Since we were there in the off-season most of the tours (all but one) were in German, so I have no idea of any of the particulars... regardless it was cool to see.

Dad joined us for the Germany part of the trip. Check out my "Mr. Rochester Hair" ... my curling iron busted... the rain would have made it wig out anyway!

Kurt loves to hike. It's o.k. for me, but just like skiing and some other things that he really likes, I require nice weather to do it happily. I think I mentioned that we didn't have that requirement.
Dad and I were "thumbs up" to take the train to the top of the very large hill. The castle ruins in Heidelberg were really cool.
Kurt and I in Zurich. A tiny bit of sun... YEAH!

Hello, my long lost friends!

Hello, my long lost friends! It's been a month since my last post.
Kurt and I took a short trip to Europe. The main purpose was to visit his "Opa" but before we went to Germany we spent a few days first in England.
This is us at the theatre. We went to see "Spam-a-Lot." If you have ever seen "Monty Python's Hold Grail" it was basically the stage version. It was funny and great to think that the actors were not putting on the accent.

Once or twice I played around with speaking like our friends on the other side of the pond. Kurt called me, "Britney" ... I sure missed my girlfriends from our trip last year. We were silly and talking silly all the time.

I thought this poster outside the National Gallery was so sweet. Kurt was gagging, think it was too sappy.
I threatened to take on Queen Elizabeth's view if he didn't get on board with the trip. You go girl!!! Rock on Liz!

We hadn't yet gotten the very best of the flowers to come, but the primroses were vibrant and everywhere! I have tried to grow them in Texas, but it just isn't the same climate.

One of the very best parts of the trip were the "London Walking Tour." These were absolutely fabulous. It was like taking an upper level college course on London.

London remains my most FAVORITE large city to visit. Everything was double the price of what it would be in the US, but I didn't care. It was wonderful to be there. I'll post some more picts. soon.

Hello, my long lost friends! It's been a month since my last post.

Special Powers

We just saw "Jumper" tonight. It was pretty good... frankly it was just fun to get out of the house and check-out for a few hours.

But, here is the question...
If you had a power, what would it be? super-strength? mind-reading? the power to be invisible? to to fly? what would be your three top picks? The guy in the movie could teleport. That would certainly be at the top of my list.
Wonder woman had lame powers. If I were her I'd have Vera Wang design a new set of under-roos... Right off the bat, she would become more powerful just by looking a little bit better. IMHO, the tiara and boots must stay. Wonder Woman's staff needs to check out Mrs. Beckham's new book, "That Extra Half Inch" There are some cool tips, WW.
Anyone know what cartoon this is from the 80's? I loved this show and would try to sneak it in on Saturday mornings. Klassy Katri... yes, that's me.

So, I learned a little more about this group from the 80's today...

I'm SURE that this band NEVER toyed with drugs... cough, cough...

Apparently they released 8 albums, including a Greatest Hits. I don't know a lot of their music, but I think that "Love My Way" is pretty cool and have it on my side bar.
"The Psychedelic Furs were at the forefront of defining a new genre of music, rebels against the aesthetic narrow-mindedness of punk. While the band's rise paralleled the first wave of MTV, the Furs had little in common with the prepackaged, fashion-oriented acts who dominated the music video channel for much of the 1980s. Too far ahead of their time to reach a modern-rock audience that didn't really exist yet, the Furs were progenitors of the guitar-based alternative rock that would, ironically, begin to find a mass audience at the same time that the band was winding down.
